Horticulture Innovation Australia Limited (HIA)
Horticulture Innovation Australia Limited (HIA) was established following the acceptance of the recommendations of the independent ACIL Allen review of Horticulture Australia Limited (HAL) in 2014. The financial and other assets of HAL were transferred to HIA under the Horticulture Marketing and Research and Development Services (Transfer of Industry Assets and Liabilities) Regulation 2014. HIA is a not-for-profit, grower-owned Research and Development Corporation (RDC) for Australia’s $9.5 billion horticulture industry. HIA’s key functions are to:
- provide leadership to, and promote the development of, the Australian horticulture sector
- increase the productivity, farm gate profitability and global competitiveness of the horticultural industries by investing grower levies and government funds in research, development, extension and marketing funds, programs and services and; providing information, services and products related to project outcomes
- promote the interests of horticultural industries overseas including the export of Australian horticultural products.

Other Federal Government Schemes
Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC)
RIRDC is a statutory authority established by the Primary Industries and Energy Research and Development Act 1989.
The Corporation was established by the Australian Government to work with industry to invest in research and development for a more profitable, sustainable and dynamic rural sector.
The National and Rural Research Priorities of the Australian Government provide an over-arching framework for public investment in rural research and development. RIRDC’s investments are closely aligned with these priorities.
Department of Agriculture (DoA)
DoA initiatives have specific objectives and guidelines to meet specific federal government objectives.
International R&D linkages
There are a variety of programs but these are usually focused on aid to developing countries (AusAID, ACIAR, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation) or technology transfer internationally (Australia-India Strategic Research Fund).
